Deir el-Medina Art

Research on art and artists from the ancient Egyptian 'Place of Truth', currently focussing on private statuary.

The Statuary Project

The aim of our research is to advance the understanding of the private statuary practice in Deir el-Medina’s environment by regrouping and recontextualising the artefacts. Specifically, we are examining what  tri-dimensional representations the artists designed, how  they produced and used them, and why  they did so.

Our Approach

We are currently cataloguing and analysing all New Kingdom statues of the village’s private individuals, held in museums worldwide or still on site, of secured or likely provenance. They are being examined for themselves but also through their textual, visual, and archaeological contexts.
